This               article               ranks               the               top               Historically               Black               Colleges               and               Universities               (HBCU)               in               the               United               States               by               average               (midhinge)               SAT               scores               for               recent               enrollees.

HBCU               are               institutions               of               higher               education               that               were               established               prior               to               1964               for               the               purpose               of               serving               black               students.

The               SAT               college               placement               exam               comprises               three               sections:               Critical               Reading,               Math,               and               Writing.

Each               section               of               the               SAT               is               worth               a               total               of               800               points;               therefore,               a               perfect               score               is               2400.
Ranking               HBCU               by               average               SAT               scores               is               the               best               methodology               for               several               reasons.

First,               the               vast               majority               of               HBCU               are               located               in               so-called               "SAT               states"               where               more               students               sit               for               the               SAT               than               the               ACT               exam.

Second,               every               leading               HBCU               reports               SAT               scores,               but               not               necessarily               ACT               scores.

Finally,               it               is               implicitly               recognized               that               SAT               scores               are               the               gold               standard               when               applying               to               elite               HBCU.

By               way               of               example,               82%               of               enrollees               at               Howard               University               submitted               SAT               results               while               only               40%               proffered               ACT               scores.
