The 2012 U.S. News & World Report law school rankings have been released. Overall, there weren't too many surprises in the top 50, although Texas finally managed to break into the top 14, sharing the ranking with perennial #14 Georgetown. In other top 14 action, Berkeley fell two spots to #9 and Michigan gained two spots to rise to #7. Virginia improved one spot in the rankings to #9 to keep its position as the best law school in the Southern United States; Duke held onto its #11 ranking to finish as a close second in the South. Yale (#1), Harvard (#2), and Stanford (#3) maintained their status as the best of the best in American legal education. Just down the list, Columbia (#4) remained the top law school in New York, followed by NYU (#6). For Chicago, UChicago (#5) kept control of its title as the best law school in the area, while Northwestern (#12) slipped one spot in the overall rankings and again finished second to UChicago. Other major top 50 shifts include UC-Davis jumping five spots to #23, Georgia and Wisconsin both dropping seven spots to #35, and Colorado dropping nine spots to #47. In addition, Indiana-Bloomington (#23), UWashington (#30), Washington & Lee (#34), and Maryland (#42) all posted notable gains. Cardozo (#50) rejoined the top 50 after a one-year hiatus and Florida State (#50) broke into the top 50, marking the first time in years (or perhaps ever) that the state of Florida has been home to two top 50 law schools. In comparison, Tier 2 schools (#51 through #100) witnessed a flurry of action. Penn State (#60), Illinois Institute of Technology (#61), Seton Hall (#61), Temple (#61), Richmond (#67), Northeastern (#71), Catholic (#79), and DePaul (#84) all posted double-digit gains in rankings. Michigan State (#95) joined the Tier 2 for the first time in its history, while Buffalo-SUNY (#84), Marquette (#95), and Louisville (#100) rejoined Tier 2 after a one-year hiatus in the 2011 rankings. Balancing out their success, San Diego (#67), Miami (#77), Kansas (#79), New Mexico (#79), Villanova (#67), St John's in NY (#95), Hawai'i (#95), and Syracuse (#100) slumped to double-digit declines in the rankings. Three schools also lost their top 100 status: Chapman, Missouri-Columbia, and William Mitchell. For those who want to take a look at the exact changes from the 2011 rankings (published in 2010) to the current rankings, the latest top 100 law schools in the United States are listed below. Bolded schools indicate notable changes in ranking from the previous year. Notable changes are considered to be a 10 percent or greater change in ranking, any change in ranking within the top 14 law schools, or any law school that moved into or out of the top 50 or top 100 law schools. 2012 USNWR Top 100 Law Schools: Law School (2011 ranking, change in rank) 1.
