Charlie Villanueva, the talented yet enigmatic power forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, is closing in on his dream to represent Republica Dominicana on the basketball court. Although he was born in New York, Villanueva's immigrant parents, Roberto Villanueva and Dora Mejia, hail from the Dominican Republic, according to his website, cv31.com. Move to DR Needs Approval by International Basketball Federation Competition in international basketball is regulated by FIBA, the International Basketball Federation, who establishes and governs the regulations for player eligibility. Internal Regulations 2008 states that a player may play for a particular country if he or she has "been born of parents both of whome (sic) were born in the dependent territory, regardless of the place of birth of the player" (H.2.3.7.1.c.iii). Villanueva cannot play for the DR until all of the paperwork is completed and the move does not affect his status with the NBA. Villanueva Won National Championship at University of Connecticut and First Team Rookie Honors with Toronto Selected as the seventh pick in the 2005 NBA Draft by the Toronto Raptors, Charlie V, as he is nicknamed, was named to the 2005-06 NBA All-Rookie First Team. He sports career averages of 13.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, according to Yahoo Sports, healthy numbers for a player who has yet to reach his prime. Villanueva played as a member of the USA gold medal winning 21-and-under World Championships team in 2004. He starred alongside of Ben Gordon, now of the Chicago Bulls, and Emeka Okofor of the Charlotte Bobcats, on the 2004 National Championship Connecticut Huskies. Charlie V Advocates for NAAF and Against Childhood Bullying A man who values faith in God as learned in Sunday School, Villanueva has been diagnosed with the autoimmune disease called alopecia areata, a non-communicable condition whose main symptom is hair loss over the entire body. He is a spokesperson for the National Alopecia Areata Foundation and supports NAAF through the Charlie Villanueva Foundation. Charlie V aims to slam dunk childhood bullying through his foundation, an ambition stoked by frequent teasing about his disease as a child. Basketball Brings Opportunities to Villanueva "Basketball allowed me to express myself in a way that created value and purpose for me...we were all the same on the basketball court and the only way to distinguish one another was through our talent abilities and not our looks," Villanueva states on his website. "Now the taunts of my early childhood drama have turned into admiring cheers as I have found success in becoming a professional NBA athlete." Dominican Republic Team May Include Big Name NBA Players No doubt Villanueva will help to bring success to the DR national team, currently ranked 31st in the FIBA World Rankings. Other NBA players who may comprise the next DR team include Al Horford of the Atlanta Hawks, Trevor Ariza of the Los Angeles Lakers, and Francisco Garcia of the Sacramento Kings. This sleek and often dominating Buck wingman may become qualified to take part in the 2009 FIBA Americas Championship for Men taking place in Mexico at the end of this summer. The DR hopes to do well in order to qualify for the 2010 World Championships and the 2012 Olympic Games. "Twitting" Charlie Stays in Touch With Fans In mid-March, Charlie V gained national attention by "twitting" his fans during half time of a basketball game in which he was playing. His team, the Bucks, reprimanded him for taking out time to send a "tweet", suggesting that he wasn't focused in on the game enough. Villanueva proved Milwaukee wrong by playing a strong second half and leading his team to victory against the World Champion Boston Celtics. |
